SUMMER ROCKING IN FULL EFFECT, YO.
1. The Shangri-La Music and Arts Festival is this weekend! Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Southern Culture on the Skids! Steve Earle! Zydeco! Funk! Bluegrass! Awesome! You can still get tickets. Visit www.sha-la.com for more info.
2. Beltek Festival is this weekend! Friday night through Saturday morning! Techno, techno, techno! Art and food and fire and lights! Totally free! Awesome! Visit www.beltekfestival.com for more info.
3. The Winterport Music Festival is this Saturday! Noon until 8 p.m.! J. Geils from the J. Geils band is playing, though he's doing gypsy jazz apparently, instead of bluesy pop music! Ask him to play a swing version of "Centerfold" or "Freeze Frame" or whatever, and see if he gets mad! Plus a bunch of other bands! $5, under 12 free! Visit www.winterportmaine.gov for more info.
4. OK, now that we've gotten the music festivals out of the way, here are some non gigantic days-long events to attend this weekend. For instance: River City Cinema's "Perils of Peroxide" outdoor film series continues in Pickering Square on Friday, showing one of the finest, most coolly elegant movies of all time: Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Movie starts at 8 p.m., or at sundown, in Pickering Square in downtown Bangor.
5. WLBZ-2's Sidewalk Arts Festival, now in its 19th year, starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, and features a wide array of artists from around the region. Stroll through downtown Bangor and along the Kenduskeag Stream, and take in the diverse offerings. Maybe even buy something - one of a kind, and locally made. What could be better?
6. If those aforementioned festivals don't do it for you, here are some other musical options.
- The Eric Green Party rocks it at Parker's Bar and Grill in Ellsworth Friday night.
- The Edith Jones Project, an all-female big band, plays at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft Saturday night ($15, $17 day of show, 7 p.m.)
- No Warning gets down and dirty at Raena's Pub in Bangor both Friday and Saturday night.
- The University of Maine at Machias Ukelele Club plays at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3 at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor.
7. Your last chance to see Ten Bucks' Theatre's production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" is this weekend in Ellsworth - 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Woodlawn Museum. $10, students $8; visit www.tenbuckstheatre.com.
WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO HAPPEN THE SAME FREAKING WEEKEND. GOD. I AM GOING TO BE DEAD COME SUNDAY EVENING. SERIOUSLY. D-E-D DED.
Check the BDN web site on Sunday and Monday for complete coverage of both Shangri-La and Beltek. It's going to be INTENSE.
